CHRISTMAS FUN RUN 2015 - ANOTHER CRACKER!

Seniors with a few juniors Christmas 2015
As part of Calderglen Harriers annual Christmas races, for the 3rd year the junior Harriers Relay Christmas fun run took place on Sunday 13th December with a record entry of 36 athletes. As normal the teams age and ability were mixed up to try make it as fair and open as possible to all who took part. We had 12 teams of 3 runners under the guise of festive names sporting a well drawn picture of the team name by in-house artist Melissa Lawton.

This year we had Snowmen, Christmas Puddings, Christmas Trees, Bells, Stockings, Crackers, Naughty List, Brussel Sprouts, Candy Canes, Wise Men, Presents and Christmas Carols.

Due to weather conditions and road works closed off part of the route to traffic the decision was made to do a safer and shorter route. With a course inspection and a pre-race jog around the course the route was declared safe to run on with no ice underfoot and we were ready for the off. So the route took the usual start and ran up towards the observatory turning right onto a small trail route leading to the zoo car park.  From there running the far side of the car park then down to the bottom turning right onto the road leading back the start with a final left turn.  This route benefited the "Mini" Harriers (under 9s) and allowed the older ones to test their speed on a short course.

This year's winning team was Christmas Puddings who were Thomas Traynor (Leg 1), Lewis Moir (Leg 2) and Megan Anderson (Leg 3) who all received their Nike vouchers for coming first.

The other teams finished in the following order: Bells-2nd, Stockings-3rd, Crackers-4th, Christmas Carols-5th, Wise Men-6th, Naughty List-7th, Candy Canes-8th, Brussel Sprouts-9th, Presents-10th and Snowmen-11th.

For the first time this year all runners who took part received a red technical t-shirt to mark the occasion alongside a selection box and a secret Santa present.

A big thank you to all the parents for bringing their kids along and supporters who there to cheer them running in this winter weather.  The parents who volunteered to be marshalls around the course and to my family Team Lawton for pre, during and post race support to get this event going.

It is really appreciated.

Could those with photos of the event please e-mail to me as I did not take any photos at the event.

Merry Christmas
Richard

CHRISTMAS FUN RUN 2015

Christmas Fun Run 2014
On Sunday 13th December the Calderglen Harriers will be holding their annual Senior and Junior Christmas Fun Run so time to get thinking of a costume!  Previous years the costumes have been Santas, the Hulk, a Ghostbuster, Christmas fairy and even Nuns!

This year, the Junior section is going to give a free special edition Calderglen Harriers t-shirt to everyone who pre-enters the Christmas Fun Run!  To do this, we need to submit the order to our clothing supplier in plenty time so we need to have entries for the race, along with the athletes t-shirt size, by Wednesday 18th November at the latest. (T-shirt sizes are age 5/6, 7/8, 9/11, 12/13, small adult, medium adult, large adult).  Entries can be notified by e-mail or to Sarah at training.

Following on the success of last year, the Junior section will be doing a Relay race.  Each team will cover 3 laps with prizes for the winning team.  However all is not lost, everyone will get a treat at the end and for those of you wishing to participate, we will have a Secret Santa.  Participation in the Secret Santa is not compulsory but those who bring something will get to pick a present.  Presents should be to the value of around £5, suitable for a boy or girl and wrapped.   We will do the lucky dip after the race.

Race Details

Junior Harriers (Relay Team)

Starts at 10.00am (arrive from 9:30am), Each runner does 1 lap (0.8 miles / 1.3k per lap), which is 2.4 miles or 3.8k
Senior Harriers (Individual race):
Starts at 11am, Run 5 laps (0.8 miles / 1.3k per lap), which is 4 miles or 6.4k

Hopefully some of the older more able junior runners will consider doing the 5 laps and challenge the "old" seniors.

EAST KILBRIDE SPORT CLUB FESTIVE EVENT

Christmas Fayre is being held on Saturday 5th December 11am-3pm in the Sports Club.

They are looking to raise enough funds to improve the seating in the function hall.

They are asking for donations for prizes for the Tombola etc and would appreciate any bottles, bath goods or home baking. These can be donated anytime up till the date of the event and it would also be great if as many Harriers as possible could pop along on the day to support the event.

This is all about improving our facilities so lets see if we can help make it a success.

Thanks
Richard

LANARKSHIRE XC CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015

Pre-race Team photo
Last weekend was the Lanarkshire AAA XC at is usual location at Drumpellier Country Park in Coatbridge.  Due to family commitments I couldn't get there until 1230 and by this time the under 13 races were in progress.  So Frances Maxwell stepped into the role of Team Manager superbly to get the race numbers and greet the junior Harriers on the course and get ready to run.

Katie receiving her Gold Medal
This year we had 17 runners scheduled to take part with 1 call off.  This was a healthy number of young eager athletes although we have had more than this over the last 3 years.

The first race of the day was the under 11 Girls with 5 Harriers amongst the field of 57 running a 1.2k course.  Libby Currie was the first Harrier home in a time of 3:40 (6th); next was Ruby Byrne in 3:57 (20th); Lucy Bennett 4:15 (34th); Rachel Jones 4:31 (43rd) and Katie Currie 6:45 (57th).  It was 3 counters for a team and Libby, Ruby and Lucy achieved 7th team. Extra special award went to Katie Currie for being 1st in the disability category. Well done Katie the pain of running was worth the wait in gold.

Joe on solo run
Next up we had 5 under 11 Harrier boys amongst the field of 63 running the same 1.2k course the girls ran however disaster struck!  When 63 under 11 boys line up eager to run and be competitive to win you don't blow a whistle and then say it is a 5 minute warning well on this occasion you do with consequences. The boys started to run like greyhounds chasing a rabbit and everyone shouting stop fell on deaf ears.  One of our runners Joe Jackson was a casualty as he listened to the starter and the same for 4 of Springburn Harriers juniors missed the false start.  Despite being upset Joe with true grit ran in the under 13 boys race and cut off the appropriate turn to run the 1.2k mainly on his own and got a great time.  Not sure how Lanarkshire AAA got the times as I thought the timekeeper wasn't ready but the times are:

Patrick Saez 3:20 (9th); Joe Jackson 3:25 (15th); Lewis Moir 3:31 (20th); Rudi Jordan 3:52 (41st) and Finn Buckman (DNF) due injury during the race.  Again it was 3 counters for a team and Patrick, Joe and Lewis achieved 5th team out of 10.

Ava Byrne with sister Ruby
Ava Byrne was now our solo under 13 girl as Freya Kane pulled out due to a cold.  This age group's course was 2.5k and Ava finished in a respectable 12:08 (39th) out of a field of 44.  Under 13 Boys we had Louis Blake coming first Harrier home in 10:14 (19th); Reece Gilliland 11:05 (28th) and Fergus Kane 11:13 (31st).  It was 3 counters for a team and Louis, Reece and Fergus achieved 7th team.  Last but not least our under 15s were out to end Calderglen's participation at this event.

The under 15 girls & boys ran a combined 3.7k race and this year we had Jack MacBain returning to this event as a second year in this age category, and Lucy Saez for the first time. Jack's time this year was 14:07 and 11th in a small field of 21.  Lucy's time was 17:48 which was a great effort racing this distance.

It was good to get 16 junior Harriers out racing as it forms another part of training, helps you measure your progress in terms of fitness and technical running skills. I am in know doubt we are doing the same type of training as other clubs but we just need to do more to have a bigger impact at events like Lanarkshire AAA XC. And in the past we have won medals in different categories at this event so it can be done.  Despite a day of mixed fortunes for all a good set of results and I am proud of all that ran.  So once more well done everyone.

Post race with Coaches
All the photos from the day are here. Hopefully you can access them if not let me know. Thank you to Frances who took the photos and Siobhan who supplied a few, and thank you to Les Kane and Zoe Blake for being club volunteers that LAAA requested even thought they ended up not being required.

TRAINING IS ON.....WED 25TH NOVEMBER

Training is back on as normal 6.30pm to 8pm for all training groups.

Now that we are getting into colder evenings can all athletes wrap up warm - hats, gloves, lots of layers and wear bright clothing as Calderglen Country Park is a dark place!

If you have too many layers on, you can take them off; if you don't have enough layers to begin with, then you're just going to get colder and colder. Nobody runs well when cold - ever see a penguin run well? No, you haven't. If penguins wore hats and gloves they'd be able to run faster and win stuff.

PS: Hats! Gloves! Bright clothing!

Richard
