WEST DISTRICT XC CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011

Megan leading Louise to the finish
After a week of extreme weather the Junior Harriers were faced with cold & dry racing conditions in Irvine this afternoon.  With a few call offs, 5 brave Harriers took part to test themselves against the rest of the young athletes within the West of Scotland.

The first race of the day was the Under 13 Girls who had the luxury of being the first runners on the course so parts of the course were still firmer on foot and less muddy.  The Under 13 Girls were represented by sisters Megan & Helen Anderson and Louise Brown.

In a field of 66 runners all the girls did really well to complete the 3.2K course and maintained good form throughout. Megan was the first Harrier over the line in a time of 15:41, followed very closely by Louise in 15:42 and the trooper of the day was Helen.  She has only recently returned to running/training and doing a cross country without spikes completed the course in a respectable 17:43.  If she maintains this level of determination and training I am positive she will be up running alongside Megan and Louise next year.

The next race was the Under 13 boys and Harrier stalwart Drew Gordon was doing this event for the second time and even though it didn’t feel like at the time he did a great race.  His time was 15:04, placing him 43 in a field of 48 runners and more importantly he achieved a PB of 1min 56secs against last year’s time of 17mins.  Well done Drew!

The final race the Harriers had young athletes competing was the u15 boys where Craig Stewart ran the race for the first time in this age category and stepped up to the bigger 4.4K route in a field of 46 runners and achieved a time of 22:35(43rd place).  Well done to Craig for continuing to do well.

On behalf of the Calderglen Harriers, I would like to thank all the young athletes and parents for making this another successful event. A lot of the young athletes this was their first time doing this event or cross country so hopefully valuable experience was gained by all which hopefully will lead us to future successes.

A full set of results will be available on the Scottish Athletics web site under fixtures then results soon.

Giffnock North AAC Schools Cross Country Races 2011

start line between tree and flag pole

As the cross country season continues a number of Calderglen Harrier young athletes were out on Sunday representing their schools at the annual Giffnock North AAC Schools Cross Country Races in Rouken Glen Park. The heavy rain and high winds from the day & night before left a quagmire of mud around the course and the start/finish area progressively got worse after each age group race.

The youngest athlete of the day was Emma Lawton, representing Kirktonholme Primary, who lined up with 81 runners in the girls Primary 6 race and put in commanding performance in this 1K cross country course seemingly gliding over the mud.  Emma established herself in first place as soon as the race started and maintained a good strong progressive lead to her closet rival around the whole course to win in a time of 4.57.  Second place runner’s time was 5.36 and third place recorded 5.37.

Next up was the Primary 7 Girls and Boys with Kate Kane representing Kirktonholme Primary.  After running Lanarkshire XC recovering from a cold and now clearly over her cold, Kate showed her true competiveness and came out fighting today finishing  19th in a field of 67 with a time of 6:03.

Mark McKenzie was representing his school Mossneuk in the Primary 7 boys’ race. This was a race Mark wasn’t looking forward to after feeling disappointed with his performance last year he was unsure how he would go...no need to worry after a year training with the Harriers.  Mark quickly established himself in the leading pack and maintained his performance around the course with a final push at the end winning the race in a time of 4:49.

Newcomer to the Harriers, Jay Lawrie was also representing Mossneuk in the boys Primary 7 race and produced a time of 5:35, placing him 25th in a field of 55.
Emma with gold medal

Last but not least another newcomer to the Harriers, Megan Anderson was representing Duncanrig High School in the S1/2 Girls race.  This is Megan’s first year with the Harriers and is showing great enthusiasm and mental toughness doing the cross country races which will help to develop her running showing dividends in the better weather next year.  Again another top 20 performer, Megan completed the course in (5.55) finishing 17th out of 41 runners. There is more to come from Megan in the West District XC Championships in Irvine.

Well done to all for taking part in the races and especially to Emma & Mark for first class performances in their age group races.  A great XC day for all the athletes in the mud!

Calderglen Harriers Junior 1K Cross Country Race

Calderglen Country Park was the venue for Calderglen Harriers Junior 1k race on Wednesday 16th November.  Instead of their usual training session 27 children from the under 9 section of the Harriers were there to race.

The 1k course took them round the cricket pitch and up onto the first rugby pitch and then back down the hill and round the cricket pitch to finish in front of the Sports Club to loud cheers from all the parents and volunteers.   The night was a great success with some encouraging times set by the children. Their enthusiasm was extremely rewarding for all the parents and coaches in attendance.   The children received a certificate on completion of the course together with a little goody bag.   This was a first for the Harriers and as the night was such a great success the coaches have decided to repeat the race again in April.  This will now be a regular event on the junior calendar.

Thank you to Frances  Maxwell, Club President & Coach for junior section, for the report.

LANARKSHIRE XC CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011

The mild November weather conditions at Drumpellier Park in Coatbridge this year provided excellent cross country racing conditions for the 11 Young Calderglen Harrier athletes who were out and all competing to high standards so it was a great sight to see the Harrier vest / yellow t-shirts amongst the many other Lanarkshire club colours. Well done to all the young athletes who took part in Saturday's races.

The race organisers, Lanarkshire Amateur Athletic Association (LAAA), changed the start of the race to near the bridge end meaning all athletes were running up hill initially however it didn’t deter the Harriers.

First to go was the Under 11 Girls event with Emma Lawton and this was her last year as an under 11, so she was determined to finish in 1st place to match her 1 race number. When the race started Emma made a push to the front and was quickly running joint lead with Dion Ingram from Motherwell AC.   It was a neck and neck race with, each taking turns leading but it was Emma who took the final lead on the last downhill and stretched a big enough gap to take 1st place comfortably in time of 3.25 (improving on her 3rd position and time by 2 seconds from 2010).

Next up was the Under 11 Boys with debuts from Finlay Dickson (16th place) and Joseph Fegan (20th place).  Despite being a fast road runner, the cross country race terrain provided a challenge for Finlay however he dug in and gave a great effort with a time of 4.04. Joseph was our youngest runner who put in a good steady pace to finish the race in 4.56.

Megan (11.31, 28th), Kate (11.33, 29th) and Louise (11.35, 30th) all continued their progress from the Lanarkshire Relay Championship in October with Anna (11.51, 33rd) debuting in cross country for the Harriers and all pulled out good solid performances.  Kate did particularly as she is still recovering from cold.   For the u13 boys, Harrier stalwart Drew Gordon (17th place) continued with a consistent steady performance in his second year as u13, recording a time of 11.08 (slightly slower than last year’s time of 11.02, (I blame the hill start)) and new boy Allan Woodhouse did very well moving up the field in the u13 race to come 4th position overall with a time of 9.16 (only 4 seconds away from 3rd place. The 3rd place runner’s time was 9.12). Good going considering it is his brother & sister are Harrier members not him! (Get this boy a registration form)

The final race the Harriers had young athletes competing was the u15 boys where John Woodhouse ran the bigger course with a good strong consistent pace achieving a time of 13.07 just outside the top ten in 11th place. Craig Stewart joined him in this race and stepped up to the 3.7K route this being his first year in the u15 age group and achieved a time of 14.50, (19th place).  Well done to Craig for continuing to do well and progressing through the age groups.

On behalf of the Calderglen Harriers, I would like to thank all the young athletes and supporting parents / carers for making this another successful event. A lot of the young athletes this was their first time doing this event or cross country so hopefully valuable experience was gained by all which hopefully will lead us to continued future successes.

A full set of results will be available soon on the Scottish Athletics web site under fixtures.

Harriers Victorious! – Paisley 3K / Cumbernauld 1K

Young athletes in the junior section continue to benefit from their training and deliver impressive race performances.
The annual Paisley 3K took place on Sunday 28th August and is an event open to adults and children.  For the 3rd year in a row Mark McKenzie took part in the event and was 18th overall, and achieved 2nd under 11 Boy overall.  He ran a pb time of 9:51 mins, improving his time by 1:30mins from the 2010 event. Mark received a lovely silver engraved plate to mark his victory.  Well done Mark!
Continuing the club success Emma Lawton took part in the Cumbernauld 1K on Sunday 11th September.  The organisers of the event grouped all the children into their respective Primary School age group and gender for P5, P6 and P7 and ran 6 1K age/gender group races.
Keen to defend her success from last year of being 1st P5 overall and 1st Girl, Emma was 1st P6 Girl.  Her time was 3:36 mins and pb by 22 seconds on last year’s race.  Emma received a trophy to mark her victory.  Well done Emma!

GSR - A Junior View

Emma on podium
The junior events took place on Saturday 3rd September in Glasgow Green with the established 3K run and the newer 1.5K event which is steadily growing into a popular event.  Both races attract young athletes from 9 years to 17 years, from new runners to club runners.  For the second year Emma Lawton ran the 1.5K to help her develop her experience running at big events and challenging herself against the many Glasgow based runners.

I know I speak with some bias, I always expect Emma to compete well in a race but she surprises me how well she does.  The plan, as we did last year, was I stay with Emma at the start of race and my wife Sarah is at the finish.  As a concerned Father/coach I tried to pass on some wisdom to Emma but she assured me she knew what to do and with that she lined up.  After a brief mass warm up the runners were under way and my task was to get round all the barriers to the finish line which is no mean feat in fact, it’s near impossible!
As Emma’s race started so did mine - to get to the other side.  I managed to get to the finish corridor next to the monument in Glasgow Green and as I did this I saw Emma in the distance on the back straight.  I eagerly looked at the finish line and eventually spied Emma coming over the line at 4:58mins.  At this point I got a frantic call from my wife saying she thought Emma might have a got a podium finish.  This started a frantic 20 mins trying to track Emma down, find how well she did and locate my wife Sarah and other daughter Melissa.  After hassling stewards and negotiating barriers I eventually saw Emma being marched away and we had a happy family reunion in the VIP tent (the nearest I will get to this is the physio tent!).  So after tucking into free coffee and Danish pastries we were shown out to the presentation area where Emma had her hard work rewarded.
Emma, age 10, was 6th overall in the 1.5K event and 3rd female (1st female was 12 years old and 2nd female 14 years old) and her time of 4:58mins was 10 seconds shy of matching the 1st female.  The award ceremony was the full works with a special trophy, flowers, and dignitaries along with photographers.  It was great achievement and experience for Emma and great for raising the Calderglen Harrier club profile.
Apart from Emma’s notable achievement there were other young athletes from the Harriers and even though they may have not received a podium finish, it is always fantastic to see the junior Harriers competing in races.  I strongly encourage this as you never know when your day will come to win a trophy.  The 3K runners I saw on the day were Mark McKenzie (12:48), Drew Gordon (13:54), Kate Kane (14:40), Mark Phimister (15:43), Liam Woods (15:43), Emma Phimister (15:56) and Sarah Crawford (sister of Alistair) (18:32).  My apologies if there is anyone else I have missed.
A special thank you to Drew and his family for cheering & supporting Emma at her award ceremony.

Glory at Lanarkshire AAA Track & Field Championships 2011

Saturday 27th August, saw the annual Lanarkshire Amateur Athletics Association’s Track and Field Championships being run at the John Wright Running Track in East Kilbride.   This is the Harriers 2nd outing at this Championships with Emma Lawton making her track debut last year at this event.
Emma returned this year to improve on her overall 4th position in the u11 800M in 2010 and the 2011 squad was Emma Lawton, Rachel Johnstone, Louise Brown and Megan Anderson – u11 800M, Kirsty McMonagle – 100M & Long Jump and Emma Campbell – u17 800M.  The two outstanding performances of the day came from the two Emmas’.
Emma Campbell lined up to do the u17 800M alongside Shettleston Harriers and EKAC athletes.  Emma started off well chasing the Shettleston Harrier around the 2 laps of the track trying to close the big gap.  Emma did fantastic to push herself all the way to the finishing line fighting with the EKAC athlete for second place in a time of 2:54 and claiming a Silver medal.  With the bar set next on the track was Emma Lawton hungry to improve her finishing position from last year.
She set off at a cracking pace opening up an early lead and by the first lap she was some 50 metres in the lead with the rest of the field strung out behind her. This decisive lead running paid off for Emma as she maintained this in the second lap and she romped home through the winning tape with a PB time of 2.41.9 minutes beating last year’s time by 20 seconds claiming a Gold medal and Lanarkshire u11 800M Champion title.
Well done to Rachel Johnstone (3:15.9), Louise Brown (3:16.3) and Megan Anderson (3:16.4) having the hard task of running the u11 800M at a fast pace putting the Harriers training to full effect. Tremendous effort from Kirsty McMonagle who broke the mould and made a challenge at the 100M (20:20) & Long Jump (1.92).  Well done Team Calderglen!
