AYR TURKEY TROT

Ayrodynamic Triathlon Club held their annual Turkey Trot race on Boxing Day.  With 4 senior Harriers running the 10k race,  the junior Harriers had Chris McCarron running the 5k event.

The weather was really bad on the coast (pictures on Calderglen Harrier FB page) with a really terrible wind (nothing to do with brussel sprouts!)  Chris ran a respectable 22:22 acheiving 15th place out of 120 runners. The winning time was 20:19.

Well done Chris keep up the training.

CHRISTMAS FUN RUN 2016

Christmas fun run has been in the Calderglen Harrier calendar since the club started back in 1984 and remains to be a popular event for all members of the club.  The junior section carried on their Christmas tradition and for the 4th year the junior Harriers Relay Christmas fun run took place on Sunday 11th December with 25 athletes.  Depsite all the planning & organising there was last minute adjustment to team members with people pulling out for various reasons however with my daugther Emma managing this task it was sorted with minor delays.  As normal the teams age and ability were mixed up to try make it as fair and open as possible to all who took part. All the teams had festive names & pictures which were drawn by my other daughter in-house artist Melissa Lawton with a supporting role from Emma.  We had 6 teams of 4 runners with the Team Stockings having 2 last runners.

This year's teams were Christmas Puddings, Snowglobes, Gingerbread men, Turkeys, Snowmen & Stockings.

Weather conditions were good so the traditional route of starting on the main road in the park next to Sports Club car park running towards and taking a right to the Zoo car park then following the exit road to Strathaven Road and then along to main park entrance back to the start.

As per last year this year's winning team was Christmas Puddings although different team personnel. This year's winners were Gabrielle Coffey (Leg 1), Eve Lindsay (Leg 2), Renee Conneff (Leg 3) and Chris McCarron (Leg 4) who all received their Odeon Cinema vouchers for coming first.

The other teams finished in the following order: Snowglobes-2nd, Stockings-3rd (same as last year), Gingerbread men-4th, Turkeys-5th and Snowmen-6th.

To add to the race we continued with tradition of handing out a selection box and our newer traditions of a secret Santa present and Calderglen Harrier brand training T-shirt.

A big thank you to all the parents for bringing their kids along and supporters who there to cheer them running.  The parents who volunteered to be marshalls around the course and to my family Team Lawton for pre, during and post race support to get this event going.

It is really appreciated.

Merry Christmas
Richard

CHRISTMAS FUN RUN 2016

On Sunday 11th December the Calderglen Harriers will be holding their annual Senior and Junior Christmas Fun Run so time to get thinking of a costume!  Previous years the costumes have been Santas, the Hulk, a Ghostbuster, Christmas fairy and even Nuns!

Last year we introduced for the juniors a free special edition Calderglen Harriers t-shirt and it was a success so we are doing again this year.

So for all PARENTS & YOUNG ATHLETES who read the blog for every child pre-entered for the Christmas Fun Run will get a free special edition Calderglen Harriers t-shirt.

To do this, we need to submit the order to our clothing supplier in plenty time so we need to have entries for the race, along with the athletes t-shirt size, by Friday 18th November at the latest. (T-shirt sizes are age 5/6, 7/8, 9/11, 12/13, small adult, medium adult, large adult).  Entries can be notified by e-mail or to Sarah at training.

Following on from previous years, the Junior section will be doing a Relay race.  Each team will cover 3 laps with prizes for the winning team.  However all is not lost, everyone will get a treat at the end and for those of you wishing to participate, we will have a Secret Santa.  Participation in the Secret Santa is not compulsory but those who bring something will get to pick a present.  Presents should be to the value of around £5, suitable for a boy or girl and wrapped.   We will do the lucky dip after the race.

Parkrun-Saturday 3rd Decemember

It was another great day for racing on Saturday with the weather cold but sunny. We had a total of 12 junior harriers and several adults competing. It was the usual fast start with the strongest runners completing the course in just under 18 minutes. First to cross the line from Calderglen was Chris in a time of 21:04 and the closely followed by Fergus in 21:03 and then Patrick in 21:17. A short while later we had Lewis in 22:23, Freya in 22:56 and Aiden 23:49. The next batch of runners included Megan in 24:00, Renee 24:48, Lucy 25:54, Brooke 26:11 and Morgan 32:27

I couldn't see Callum's time on the site.

Overall we had 7 PBs and everyone else ran well and were close  to their fastest times. We are going in the right direction and the additional Saturday training session seems to be getting results.

CALDERGLEN HARRIERS HAT

As our winter training progresses the autumn weather kicks in with lowering temperatures leading us to a cold winter you could benefit from keeping yourself warm and maximising your body heat during training nights. Then look no further than a Calderglen Harrier commemorative hat. In 2014 Calderglen Harriers had their 30th anniversary and as part of those celebrations we got commemorative hats for members.  I have a final stock of 21 commemorative hats which are available at a cost of £3.

If you looking for a Christmas stocking filler for your loved one(s), any new members to the club, existing members looking to renew their well worn hat or any other family or friends wish to purchase such a fetching hat then just speak to Sarah or I on Wednesday training nights. Alternatively leave a note on the blog.

SUNSHINE ON STRATHCLYDE PARK

Saturday 5th November was our first club supported Parkrun event for the junior Harriers. Although a cold morning the sun was shining on Strathclyde Park and a hard core squad of 11 turned up to test themselves against Parkrun's finest and each other. You can't be free advertising so as instructed most Harriers either had club vests or training T-shirts on to promote the club.

Team photo pre race
All club junior coaches were there in support and 3 of the parents were there Karen McCarron, Les Kane and Paul Kane who also ran the event. Les & Paul both help John regularly on Wednesday training nights. John opted to run to support his training squad and see how he fared amongst his athletes.  Richard and Mark were there in non running capacity as both were running the National Short Course Championship in Renfrew later in the day. Frances Maxwell took on the role of official photographer but by the end of the event her fingers had almost frozen off as it was sunny but cold.

The turnout and the results were impressive. So proud of all that turned up to run the best they could and duly some got Personal bests. No less than 6 Pbs from the junior Harriers and senior Harrier Julie Beveridge achieved a Pb.

Chris first junior Harrier home
245 runners in the field.

WEEKEND ROUND UP 29 / 30 OCTOBER

The inaugural junior Parkrun event started at Rouken Glen Park on Sunday 30th October at 0930. This event is for (4-14 year olds) only.

There was 199 runners in the field which is brilliant for a first time event focused on junior runners. More amazingly there was only 11 club runners in the field with 188 non club runners. Just shows you there is an appetite for kids to run and experience the sport for the first time. Long may it continue.

Great results from all Harriers. Patrick has set his benchmark high for next time, great effort from our girls and unofficial Harrier Ben Buchanan.

Rouken Glen Park Junior Parkrun #1 (2k) - 30/10/16

2nd, Patrick Saez, 7.54, 2nd junior parkrun
35th, Lucy Saez, 9.39, 1st junior parkrun
117th, Brooke Conneff, 12.39, 2nd junior parkrun

I need to mention to Andrew Buchanan's son Ben.

18th, Ben Buchanan, 9.03, 1st junior parkrun (we will get him into the club)

199 runners in the field.

NEW JUNIOR PARKRUN

**Major news for all mini & junior Calderglen Harriers**

There is a new junior Parkrun event starting at Rouken Glen Park on Sunday 30th October at 0930. This event is for  (4-14 year olds) only.

The course is a 2 lap, anti clockwise course, which starts in front of the clock archway. It follows the broad path up and round to the left then passes the skatepark on the right, before turning left at the gateway and left again before the pavilion towards the centre of the park. There is then a right turn past the playpark and then left again back to the start point for the second lap. The second lap repeats the first but finishes before the start point on the path to the right, beside the large tree.

This is a great new weekly regular local event for all mini & junior Calderglen Harriers to do wither you are a beginner, experienced or fun runner. As Nike would say it "Just Do It".

GREAT SCOTTISH JUNIOR RUN

Harrier Junior Squad post race
It was a cold but sunny when we met up at George Square. We had a warm up around part of the 2.5k course and thanks to Stuart Waugh for helping out with this. The groups were split into two based on ages of 9 to 11 and 12 to 15. The runners were asked to go into relative pens depending on their age. Tension was high and there wss alot of jostling for position.  At one point the compare (Radio Scotland's own Bryan Burnett) had to restore order!!. The older group set of first and quickly followed by the younger ones. It only seemed a matter of minutes before the first runners started to come through. There was fine performances from the Harriers and the times were as follows:

Aidan Howell in action
Chris McCarron 10:24

Lewis Moir 11:05

Patrick Saez 11:08

Fergus Kane 11:43

Freya Kane 11:57

Ava Byrne 12:46

Aiden Howell 13:31

Francis Santangeli 13:40

Lucy Saez 13:54

Eve Lindsay 16:05

Anna Lindsay 16:05

Emma Hutton 16:07

It was a great day and hopefully we can build upon this.

Thanks Mark for the report.
