CUMBERNAULD 1k

Lewis &  Kai  on the move
On Sunday 18th September, North Lanarkshire Leisure hosted their annual running event which is a 10k race with fun runs for children over 1k and 3k distance.

Calderglen Harriers were represented by Lewis Moir and  Kai Wheeler who ran the Primary 6 race. This was over 1k distance with boys and girls of same age.

Lewis crossed the finishing line in 3rd place in a time of 3:32. Kai Wheeler completed the race but not sure of placing & time as there doesn't seem to be any official results for the 1k.

Thanks to Lewis's Mum Lynsey for keeping update with the   news of Harriers running and photos.

MOTIVATIONAL WORDS FROM A COACH

Motivational words from John Mullen - Coach for u13 to u17 squad

Hi All

This is added encouragement to take part in the Great Scottish Junior run.

In the last year and a half the club has increased to 1.5 hour training on a Wednesday.  Mark Saez has introduced a Saturday morning training session.  We introduced technical drills and got these demo’ed by Derek Hawkins (Scottish Marathon runner) and his dad Robert.  All children now do dynamics and technical drills weekly as well as core strength work.

Richard Lawton and myself completed our UK Athletics (Coach in Running Fitness) level two badges in Jan 2016  and we now planned weekly sessions based around the curriculum and we have certainly seen results in our athletes technique and running style and improvements in speed and strength.

The next piece of the jigsaw should be some races.  Some are already doing parkruns which is great,  but why not all take a look at the link for the Great Scottish Junior Run and think about entering if your 15 years old or younger.

Thanks
John Mullen

STIRLING 2k FUN RUN

On Sunday 11th September Central AC held their annual 10k road race event which incorporated a 2k fun run to include junior athletes.  The race was open to under 15s and below and Calderglen Harriers were represented by Lewis Moir from the under 11 training squad.

Lewis en route to finish
This is Lewis's second major race of the season and he was improved already from the last with attending Wednesday and Saturday club sessions and support from his Grandpa Stuart Waugh.

Lewis on podium
Lewis was 30th overall in a mixed field of age and gender of 107 runners. He was 3rd fastest finishing under 11 boy in a great time of 8mins 14 secs. Well done Lewis fantastic.

GREAT SCOTTISH JUNIOR RUN

Let's get involved in this one.  Calling all squad members aged 15 and under on Saturday 1st October. Race starts at 10am.

The Great Scottish Junior Run is on the date above. Distance is 2.5K...entry £7.00.

For entry details follow this link......http://greatscottishrun.com/super-saturday

A bit of inspiration for our young athletes. My own daughter Emma who has ran for Calderglen Harriers and now helps me with the under 11 squad did this event back in 2011 when she was 10 years old.

Back then it was a 1.5k event and she was was 6th overall in the 1.5K event and 3rd female (1st female was 12 years old and 2nd female 14 years old) and her time of 4:58mins was 10 seconds shy of matching the 1st female.

See full blog report: http://calderglenjuniors.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/gsr-junior-view.html

So come on lets try and get as many junior Harriers taking part and you never know maybe you will end up on the podium?

If you enter let me know so on race day all the Harriers can meet up together.
